Started playing in fifth grade - public school music program, concert band, marching band, school orchestra, dance band (doubling on sax), etc.

Principal clarinet for the California Youth Symphony while in high school.
College: UC San Diego -- major: mathematics; minor (almost major): music with emphasis on chamber music performance.
Studied chamber music performance with Bertram Turetzky, a noted double bass soloist; and clarinet with Walter Magnussen, principal clarinet with the San Diego Opera Orchestra. Dropped out of the music major program after the department changed the graduation requirements -- the new requirements would have meant another year of school. I could have fought this and made them stick by the original plan, but I was low on energy at the time.

Stopped playing after college (1971), until about ten years ago. Now play a lot of chamber music (current groups: woodwind quintet, woodwind quintet/piano sextet, clarinet/horn/piano trio, string trio/clarinet/horn/piano sextet), and two local entry-by-audition community groups (a wind ensemble and a large orchestra, principal clarinet in both).

Currently studying chamber music performance with Mark Sokol, violinist and chair of the San Francisco Conservatory chamber music department (was first violin with the Naumberg award winning Concord quartet based at Dartmouth) and clarinet with Anthony Striplin, a local (San Francisco) clarinetist specializing in chamber music performance.

Areas of interest/expertise:
Obviously chamber music, although I claim no expertise. I really do enjoy playing in small ensembles, especially with strings and/or piano (my wife is a very good pianist).
