Living near: Cape Girardeau, Missouri (Southeast Missouri State University) About Michael DeanDr. Michael Dean is Associate Professor of Clarinet and Saxophone at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He is also President of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors (NACWPI). Dr. Dean is an active clarinet recitalist, soloist, clinician, and orchestral/chamber musician. In October of 2008 Dr. Dean will present recitals, master classes, and clinics on a tour of England with stops at the Royal Northern College of Music, Liverpool Hope University, Colchester Institute Centre for Music and Performing Arts, and other venues. His new CD, Desertscape: New Music for Clarinet, will be released in late summer 2008. ) He has appeared as a recitalist at Carnegie Hall, the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest conference, and the NACWPI National Symposium. Recently, he presented recitals and master classes at universities on tours of New York State (Eastman, Crane, and Ithaca College), Southern California (San Diego State, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Northridge, and CalArts), and Texas (University of North Texas, SMU, Texas A&M-Commerce, and TCU). He also recently presented clinics at the MENC National Conference and the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. He has premiered and edited several new clarinet works and is featured as chamber musician and soloist on the Red Mesa Trio CD. Dr. Dean's publications include a book, Clarinet On Campus, and articles in journals such as WINDPLAYER, the NACWPI Journal, and the Southwestern Musician. Additionally, he is the founder and director of the annual Southeast Missouri Single Reed Day festival. He is currently Associate Principal Clarinet with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Southwest Symphony Orchestra, Nevada Symphony Orchestra, Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, Garland Symphony Orchestra, and the Red Mesa Trio. Dr. Dean holds degrees in clarinet performance from Texas Tech University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of Texas at Arlington. His teachers include Robert Walzel, Philip Aaholm, Carol Jessup, Bob Ackerman, and Jess Youngblood. Michael Dean and his family reside in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
